Who we are

A sacred thread connecting us to the land

The hill that rises 473 metres behind the homestead has carried the name Tutumatai since it was given by our tūpuna Uepōhatu as a sentinel over the lands that came under his mana. Beside it stands Tutukura, its companion sentinel. These are not just farm features. They are named by tūpuna.

On this whenua sits the urupā of Umuariki — grandson of Uepōhatu, grandfather of Ngakonui — whose pā occupied this very ground and whose name our urupā carries. We are Ngāti Rangi, and our tūpuna rest here.

Tutumatai Station is operated by Rotokautuku X1C Incorporation, governed by elected directors on behalf of 78 shareholders and their whānau. We farm this land. We protect it. And we will return it to those who come after us in better shape than we found it.
